Les Mills FUNCTIONAL STRENGHT™.
Minutes
Les Mills Functional Strength™ is a 45-minute full-body class at Iconic Health Clubs that blends traditional heavy lifting with dynamic, real-life movement patterns. Using barbells, weights and resistance bands, the class builds athletic power, improves coordination and boosts confidence for everyday tasks and sports performance. It runs at all four Iconic Health Clubs locations across Dublin.
Les Mills Functional Strength™ is built on a straightforward principle: lift heavy, move well. Rather than isolating muscles on machines, the class is structured around natural movement patterns, squats, pushes, pulls and carries, that recruit multiple muscle groups at once. This functional approach is designed to transfer directly into your daily life and sporting performance, while building genuine, lasting strength.
Every Les Mills Functional Strength™ session follows a structured format designed to make the most of 45 minutes. The class opens with a warm-up to prepare the body for load and activate the key muscle chains before the work begins.
The working blocks that follow are built around compound movements, squats, deadlifts, presses, rows and pulls, combined with dynamic patterns that challenge coordination and stability. The weights used are heavier than in a muscular endurance class, with lower rep ranges, which means each repetition demands more from the body and drives genuine strength adaptation.
The equipment is straightforward. You will use a barbell with weight plates, dumbbells and resistance bands. All equipment is provided at every Iconic location. You select your own weights for each movement, so you can make the session as challenging or as manageable as you need it to be, and increase the load as you get stronger.
At 45 minutes, the session is compact and efficient. The shorter format concentrates the intensity rather than diluting it, making it one of the most time-efficient strength workouts on the timetable.

Les Mills Functional Strength™ is designed for anyone who wants to build real, usable strength, whether you are new to free weights or already train regularly.
If you are new to barbell training, Les Mills Functional Strength™ gives you access to the fundamental movement patterns in a coached, structured environment. Your instructor will guide you through technique on every exercise, helping you build the movement quality and confidence that is difficult to develop alone on the gym floor. Learning to squat, hinge, press and pull correctly in a class setting is one of the most valuable things you can do before taking those movements into your own training.
If you already lift, Les Mills Functional Strength™ provides a structured, coach-led session built around the compound movements that drive the most meaningful strength gains. Training in a group format with a set programme and a time limit pushes you to maintain intensity throughout the session in a way that self-directed training often does not.
The class is also well suited to athletes training for sport outside the gym. Swimming, rugby, cycling, football, tennis and running all benefit from a foundation of functional strength. The movements trained in this class, pushing, pulling, squatting and hinging under load, directly develop the physical qualities that improve performance across most sports.
Les Mills Functional Strength™ is primarily a strength programme. The compound movements used in each session recruit large muscle groups simultaneously — legs, back, chest, shoulders and arms working together rather than in isolation. This produces a greater muscular and hormonal stimulus than isolation-based training and builds the kind of strength that carries over into real life.
The programme develops maximal strength and muscular power, which are distinct qualities from the muscular endurance trained in higher-rep classes. With heavier loads and fewer repetitions, the central nervous system is more heavily recruited, driving the development of fast-twitch muscle fibres and functional strength that is applicable beyond the gym.
Coordination and body awareness are also central to the programme. Functional movements require the body to work as a unit, improving your ability to control a load through a full range of motion, stabilise your joints under pressure and coordinate multiple muscle groups at once. These qualities reduce injury risk and make you more physically capable in sport and in everyday life.
Beyond the physical benefits, there is a measurable confidence effect that comes from learning to lift heavy in a structured environment. Progress in Functional Strength is tangible — you add weight, the movements become cleaner and the things that once felt difficult start to feel manageable. That sense of physical capability extends well beyond the studio.

Both Functional Strength and BodyPump are barbell-based group fitness classes, but they train different physical qualities and suit different goals.
BodyPump focuses on muscular endurance and toning through lighter weights and high repetitions. The goal is to exhaust each muscle group over the course of many reps, building lean muscle and burning a high volume of calories. The format dedicates individual tracks to specific muscle groups and is more aerobically demanding over the course of the session.
Functional Strength uses heavier loads and lower repetitions, with movements that mirror real-life patterns like squats, pushes and pulls. The goal is to build raw strength, athletic power and coordination. Each repetition is more physically demanding, even though the total volume is lower.
If your goal is toning, calorie burn and muscular endurance, BodyPump is the better fit. If you want to build strength and power that transfers into sport and daily life, Functional Strength is designed for exactly that. Many members train both across the week and find they complement each other effectively.
Les Mills BodyPump — The original barbell class for lean muscle, toning and calorie burn. Available at all four locations.
Les Mills BodyCombat — A high-energy martial arts cardio class burning up to 740 calories. Available at Smithfield and Camden St.
