Les Mills BODYPUMPβ’.

Les Mills BodyPump is the original barbell class for anyone looking to get lean, toned and strong. Using light to moderate weights with high repetitions, BodyPump works every major muscle group in a single session and can burn up to 540 calories. It runs at all four Iconic Health Clubs locations across Dublin, making it one of the most accessible classes on the timetable.
BodyPump is built on what Les Mills calls the Rep Effect. Rather than lifting heavy weights for a few repetitions, you use lighter weights and perform many repetitions to exhaust each muscle group. This approach is scientifically proven to build lean muscle, burn fat and improve muscular endurance without adding bulk. It is the reason BodyPump has become one of the most popular group fitness programmes in the world.
Every BodyPump session follows a structured format designed by Les Mills. Each release features new choreography set to new music, so the class evolves regularly and stays challenging.
A typical class works through a series of tracks, each targeting a different muscle group. You will start with a warm-up track to prepare your body and establish the movement patterns. From there, the class moves through dedicated tracks for squats, chest, back, triceps, biceps, lunges, shoulders and core. Each track uses the barbell, weight plates or a combination of both, with your instructor demonstrating the technique and coaching you through every set.
The equipment is straightforward. You use a barbell, a set of weight plates at different sizes, and a bench step. All of this is provided at every Iconic location. You choose your own weights for each track, so you can make the class as challenging or as manageable as you need it to be.
BodyPump is available as either a 45-minute or 60-minute session. The 60-minute format includes all muscle group tracks. The 45-minute version covers the same ground but in a condensed format with fewer tracks.
Smithfield also runs a “Welcome to Pump” intro session at 18:00 on Mondays, immediately before the main class. This short walkthrough covers the basic movements and equipment setup, making it the ideal entry point if you have never tried BodyPump before.

BodyPump is designed for everyone. That is not a marketing claim. It is how the programme works. Because you choose your own weights for every track, a complete beginner using just the bar can train alongside an experienced member lifting significantly heavier, and both get an effective workout.
If you are new to weight training, BodyPump is one of the best ways to learn the fundamental movement patterns. Squats, deadlifts, presses, rows and curls are all covered in a coached, structured environment where technique is emphasised and you can build confidence before taking those movements onto the gym floor on your own.
If you already lift weights, BodyPump provides a high-volume, endurance-based complement to your strength training. The light-weight, high-rep approach targets muscular endurance and aerobic fitness in a way that heavy lifting alone does not. Many experienced gym members use BodyPump as an active recovery or conditioning session alongside their regular programme.
The class is also popular with members who want a time-efficient full body workout. A single 60-minute BodyPump session hits every major muscle group, which means you can achieve a comprehensive strength training session in a single visit rather than splitting it across multiple gym sessions through the week.
BodyPump is a full body resistance workout. Each track isolates a specific muscle group, so by the end of the session you have trained your legs, chest, back, shoulders, triceps, biceps and core.
The high-repetition format builds muscular endurance and lean muscle tone rather than maximal strength. Research conducted by Les Mills and independent exercise scientists has confirmed that regular BodyPump participation improves aerobic fitness, muscular strength and muscular endurance, while also delivering significant calorie and fat-burning effects.
The class also develops bone density. Weight-bearing exercise is one of the most effective ways to maintain and build bone strength, which becomes increasingly important as we age. BodyPump delivers this in a supervised, structured format that is safer than unsupervised heavy lifting for members who may be unfamiliar with barbell training.
Beyond the physical benefits, there is evidence that BodyPump has positive psychological effects. The combination of music, group energy and progressive achievement creates a sense of accomplishment that keeps members coming back. It is consistently one of the highest-attendance classes at every Iconic location.
BodyPump is available at all four Iconic Health Clubs locations. It is the most widely scheduled Les Mills class across the network.

Both BodyPump and Les Mills Functional Strength are barbell-based group fitness classes, but they serve different purposes.
BodyPump focuses on muscular endurance and toning through light weights and high repetitions. The goal is to exhaust each muscle group over the course of many reps, building lean muscle and burning calories. The format is more structured, with each track dedicated to one muscle group.
Functional Strength uses heavier weights and lower repetitions, with movements that mimic real-life movement patterns like squats, pushes and pulls. The goal is to build raw strength, athletic power and coordination. Sessions are 45 minutes and more physically demanding per rep, even though the total volume is lower.
If your goal is toning, calorie burn and muscular endurance, BodyPump is the better fit. If you want to build strength and power, Functional Strength is designed for that. Many members do both across the week and find they complement each other well.
Les Mills BodyCombat – A high energy martial arts cardio class burning up to 740 calories. Available at Smithfield and Camden St.
