Les Mills BODYCOMBATβ’.
Minutes
Les Mills BodyCombat is a high energy, martial arts inspired cardio workout where you punch, kick and strike your way through a non-contact class that can burn up to 740 calories per session. Drawing on moves from karate, boxing, taekwondo, muay thai and kung fu, it is one of the most intense and rewarding group fitness classes on the timetable.
No martial arts experience is needed. Every movement is broken down by your instructor and set to a driving soundtrack that keeps your energy high from the first combination to the final cool-down. You control the intensity. Go harder to push your limits, or dial it back and focus on technique. Either way, you will leave feeling stronger and less stressed than when you walked in.
BodyCombat follows a structured format designed by Les Mills, the world’s leading group fitness programme provider. Each release features professionally choreographed combinations set to new music, so the class stays fresh and challenging.
A typical session moves through a series of rounds, each targeting different muscle groups and martial arts disciplines. You might start with boxing-style jabs and crosses to warm up your upper body, then move into kicks and knee strikes drawn from muay thai and taekwondo. Kata sequences from karate build coordination and control, while power tracks push your heart rate to its peak.
The class is entirely non-contact. You are striking the air, not a bag or a partner. This makes it accessible to everyone regardless of size, strength or experience.
BodyCombat is available as either a 45-minute or 60-minute session depending on the timetable slot. Both formats follow the same structure, with the 60-minute version including additional rounds.
Smithfield also offers a “Welcome to Combat” intro session, which runs directly before the main class. This short session walks you through the fundamental movements so you can step into your first full BodyCombat class with confidence.

BodyCombat suits a broad range of members. If you enjoy high energy cardio but find treadmills and bikes repetitive, the martial arts format gives you something to focus on beyond simply pushing through minutes. The combinations engage your mind as well as your body, which makes the time fly.
If you are looking for a stress release, few classes match BodyCombat. The physical act of punching and kicking is a proven way to release tension, and the intensity of the workout triggers a significant endorphin response. Many members describe it as the best part of their week for clearing their head.
The class is suitable for all fitness levels. First-timers can start with smaller movements and lower kicks while they learn the sequences. Experienced members can add power, speed and height to every strike. Your instructor will always show options for both.
If you enjoy BodyCombat, you might also like our BoxFit class at IFSC, which takes a similar combat-inspired approach with a focus on boxing technique.
BodyCombat is primarily a cardiovascular workout, but it delivers much more than just cardio. The kicking movements work your quads, hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors through a full range of motion. The punching combinations tone your arms, shoulders and upper back. And the rotational movements that power every punch and kick provide serious core training.
Les Mills research shows that BodyCombat delivers core conditioning equivalent to a dedicated abs class, because the twisting and bracing involved in every strike engages your entire midsection throughout the session. Your coordination, agility and speed also improve with regular attendance as the combinations become more natural and you are able to add power and precision.
The calorie burn is significant. A 60-minute BodyCombat session can burn up to 740 calories depending on your effort level and body weight. Even the 45-minute format delivers a substantial calorie output because the intensity stays high throughout.
