Aqua Slim is a pool-based toning class that uses water resistance and aquatic dumbbells to sculpt and strengthen your upper body, abs and glutes. The class is designed to be targeted and efficient, focusing on the muscle groups that respond best to water-based resistance training.
Unlike a general aqua aerobics session, Aqua Slim is specifically structured around toning and body sculpting. Every exercise is chosen to work a particular area, and the water amplifies the effort by providing resistance throughout the full range of every movement. The result is a class that delivers visible toning results while being completely gentle on your joints.
Your instructor leads you through a sequence of targeted exercises performed standing in the pool. Using aquatic dumbbells and the natural resistance of the water, you will work through movements that isolate and challenge specific muscle groups in your upper body, midsection and lower body.
A typical session includes arm exercises like lateral raises, bicep curls and tricep extensions, all performed against the drag of the water and the buoyancy of the aquatic dumbbells. Core work focuses on rotational and stabilisation movements that engage your abs and obliques. Lower body exercises target your glutes, inner thighs and outer thighs through movements like leg presses, side kicks and squats.
The class runs for 30 to 45 minutes depending on the session. Music drives the pace, and your instructor will guide you through each block with clear demonstrations. You can adjust the intensity by changing the speed and size of your movements. Faster, larger movements create more water resistance and increase the challenge.

Aqua Slim is designed for anyone who wants to tone and sculpt their body in a low impact environment. It appeals to people who are specifically interested in body shaping and muscle definition rather than general cardiovascular fitness.
If you are looking for a class that targets your arms, stomach and glutes without the joint stress of land-based weights or HIIT training, Aqua Slim delivers exactly that. The water supports your body throughout, reducing the load on your knees, hips and lower back by up to 90 percent.
The class is suitable for all fitness levels. If you are new to exercise, the water slows movements down and gives you time to learn the technique. If you already train regularly, the resistance of the water combined with the aquatic dumbbells provides a surprisingly tough workout that complements your gym floor sessions.
Aqua Slim is particularly popular with members who want to maintain their toning routine while managing joint conditions, recovering from injury, or simply looking for a training format that is effective without being punishing on the body.
Water-based toning exercises work differently from their land-based equivalents, and in several ways they work better.
On land, gravity only provides resistance in one direction. A bicep curl is hard on the way up but easy on the way down. In the pool, the water resists your movement in both directions. Lifting the dumbbell works your biceps against buoyancy, and pressing it back down works your triceps against the drag of the water. This means every repetition trains opposing muscle groups simultaneously, giving you a more balanced and efficient workout.
Water also provides what exercise scientists call accommodating resistance. The harder and faster you push, the more resistance you encounter. This makes the workout naturally self-adjusting. You get challenged at a level that matches your effort, which is ideal in a group class where fitness levels vary.
The hydrostatic pressure of the water gently compresses your muscles throughout the session, which supports blood flow and helps reduce swelling. Many members find they feel less sore after an aqua toning class than after a similar effort on land, which means you can train more frequently with better recovery.
Smithfield (Dublin 7)Β Aqua Slim runs multiple times per week at Smithfield, making it one of the most frequently scheduled aqua classes at this location. Sessions appear on Tuesday mornings at 10:00, Wednesday evenings at 18:10, and Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the heated pool.
Smithfield offers the broadest range of aqua fitness classes across any Iconic location. If you enjoy Aqua Slim, you can combine it with Aqua Pump, Aqua Jump or Aqua Mix on different days for a varied pool training programme.
Book via the Iconic Health Clubs mobile app or check the full Smithfield timetable for current times.
Dartry, Camden Street and IFSCΒ Aqua Slim is not currently on the Dartry timetable. Dartry does have a swimming pool and runs Aqua Aerobics, Aqua Pump and Aqua Combat. Camden Street and IFSC do not have swimming pools, so aqua classes are not available at those locations.
Both Aqua Slim and Aqua Pump are resistance-based pool classes, but they have different focuses. Aqua Pump is a broader strength class that works the full body using aquatic barbells and dumbbells with compound movements like squats, lunges and presses. Aqua Slim is more targeted, focusing specifically on toning and sculpting the upper body, core and glutes with isolation-style exercises.
If your goal is overall strength and functional fitness, Aqua Pump is the better fit. If you are more focused on body sculpting and muscle definition in specific areas, Aqua Slim is designed for that. Many members do both classes across the week to get the benefits of each approach.
Aqua PumpΒ – Full body pool strength training with aquatic barbells and dumbbells. Available at Smithfield and Dartry.
Aqua MixΒ – A varied class combining elements from several aqua fitness formats. Available at Smithfield.
Aqua AerobicsΒ – A classic pool fitness class for cardiovascular conditioning. Available at Dartry.
